The History of the Double Cork

Innsbruck, Austria, 12/8/2008 by TTR Press Office
The Double Cork was first introduced into competition when David Benedek (GER) wowed the crowd with an unbelievable new trick at the 2006 6Star Air & Style Munich. The breathtaking big air maneuver has become the new benchmark in competitive snowboarding and with the Nissan X-Trail Jam being the first 6Star event on the Swatch TTR calendar all riders will be keen to prove themselves and see if they’ve got what it takes.

Travis Rice (USA) took it to another level when he consistently landed the backside Double Cork throughout the 07/08 TTR World Tour, pushing the limits of what is possible on a snowboard, whilst urging on the next generation to step it up. Throughout the Southern Hemisphere season riders have been training hard, practicing their spins and rotations, trying to stomp the illusive Double Cork. When the world’s top riders ascend on the Tokyo Dome on December 12th, crowds all over the world will be watching with anticipation, ready to see the next insane phase of TTR competition. Seb Toots (CAN) is one rider who has shown he has what it takes to stomp the Double Cork, proving so at the 3Star Billabong Snowstock Downunder where he unleashed the trick on the unsuspecting onlookers.

“I'm doing a lot of trampoline, practicing some new doubles corks. I know I need to do a lot of good tricks to do well in this contest”, said Seb, letting everyone know there’s a damn good chance he’ll be throwing down the trick that scored him his ticket to the big time.

Another rider who is keen to step it up is Kevin Pearce (USA) and after last year’s run at the title we all know he’s got what it takes. “Travis has set the bar for Double Corks and he’s been the one to lead that progression. I haven’t been able to step up…yet, but that’s where it’s heading”, he was quoted as saying, and with skills like his there’s a good chance he will deliver.

With an awesome list of confirmed riders all known to raise the bar, the 6Star Nissan X-Trail Jam will no doubt provide the platform for the Double Cork to come to the party. The crowd will be cheering for it, the riders will be pushing for it…It’s going to be on!

That isn't a double cork that Michalchuk is doing, it's a double backflip with a late 180

Yeah it was def JP Walker. I remember popping that DVD in and seeing that shit... then reading about it in Transworld the next month.

Oh, and he still has the best style. Gold medals don't necessarily mean you look good doing it...
