It's Official: Skateboarding Joins the Olympics

London, England, 4/1/2010
Two days after London was elected as the host city for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in 2005 the International Olympic Committee axed both softball and baseball. In an urgent last minute decision it has been decided that skateboarding and Freestyle BMX will replace the two sports.
Originally the plan was to not include any new sports in the programme before the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Summer Olympic Games, but the IOC changed its mind in the 12th hour.

From what Tackyworld.com gathers the reason for the last minute change of mind was the success events such as the X Games, Maloof Money Cup and The Dew Tour has seen, and from fearing that Rob Dyrdek's upcoming Street League Skateboarding would become an unofficial "Olympic Games of Skateboarding".

As you know IOC President Jaques Rogge has been spotted taking sneaky photos at The X Games numerous time the last couple of years and it was only a matter of time before he hit the on switch.

Ironically street will not be a feature at the 2012 Olympics, as the IOC is yet to come up with a course that would please both the freestyle BMX riders and the street skaters. "We realise the street skaters will not compromise their arena and share it with the BMX athletes, the way snowboarders and freeskiers have done with the Winter Olympics Superpipe", said Rogge in a statement. Vert, slalom and freestyle will be the featured skateboard disciplines, with a plan to introduce street in Rio.

Stay tuned for more on the Olympics!
