There was some heavy European influence with Finland's Eniz Fazliov making it to the semi-finals by sliding stylish backside lipslides across the bank to wall, and lipsliding across and down the entire 12 pyramid rail every time. The Netherland's Ricardo Paterno was one of the last white boys in the Ollie Pop High Ollie challenge, while his fellow countryman Rob Maatman had a good chance of making the coveted Top 3 until an unfortunate fall right before the finals took him out. With 12 foot 360 flips, gap back smiths, and the most stylish back foot caught nollie bigspins over the pyramid, he placed 1st in the Semi-finals.
The Flip squad proved they have one of the strongest teams around, by winning the 1st Place position on both days of qualifiers. (Louie Lopez on Friday, Luan Oliveira on Saturday.) But the biggest surprise of the weekend traveled to California from the great state of Oklahoma. Clint Walker blew everyone away with the fastest and sickest tricks of the weekend including a gap over the entire 12 ft pyramid to 5-0 the hubba, a 12 ft ollie sex change, and f/s 5-0 flip out. Tricks like that earned Clint a total of three awards over the weekend. Some other note worth skating came from Brazilian Felipe Gustavo with a switch flip s/s b/s tail to shuvit out, and Florida's CJ Dixon's f/s bigspin to f/s lip across the flat bar every time. Of course there was mayhem and drama throughout the competitions with announcers cracking jokes all day, crazy drunk spectators stumbling around the course, and 14 year old girls wearing way too short naughty nurse outfits. Overall great and skating and fun times were had by everyone, and Costa Mesa Damn Am proves to be one of the best Am competitions of the year.
